The perp, Omar Thornton, was called in for a disciplinary hearing at a beer distribution company where he worked. He had been recorded on video stealing beer from the warehouse, and was given the option to be fired or resigning. He signed the resignation papers and was leaving the building when he decided to get two handguns that he had in his lunchbox.
After retrieving the weapons he began his shooting spree. Employees called 911 and the police were on the scene within three minutes of the first call. As the police began to arrive Thornton locked himself inside of an office and called his mother to explain his situation.
While locked in the office, Thornton called 911 after calling his mother and claimed that it was "racism" from the mostly white employees at the company that was the motive for his massacre. He hung up the phone and then shot himself in the head.
In total there were eight people killed, and two other employees were seriously injured. This was the deadliest workplace shooting in CT history.
Investigators found absolutely no evidence of racism and stated that he "did not understand the concept of seniority" and therefore believed he was the target of racism. A co-worker also stated that Thornton asked him if he knew any good White men and said “You got to kill them before they go bad.”
